Some would blame it on my upbringing, but I think it is based on my moral code. I’m uncomfortable shooting nudes. Deciding when nudity is art and when it is porn is something I think all people struggle with. It is obvious there are both cases, but where to draw the line is the issue.
I’m not usually uncomfortable during the shooting, but I’m uncomfortable displaying my nude work. Mostly because I know for a lot of people nudity = pornography. Heck, my sister in law once said an image I shot of a friend in a school girl outfit was porn. So you just can’t tell.
But the point of this series is I’m not making apologies about shooting nudes anymore.
One of the points of art is to capture or create beauty. Some people find that beauty in nature, others in cars. There are all kinds of photography out there and each photographer is called to a particular subject matter.
I’m called to shooting models. That’s where I find the beauty to capture.
Sometimes I shoot nudes. It isn’t all I do, but when the model has a figure, a look, or an ability to move that begs to be shot without clothes, I do. Some people may not like that. They may be offended. I’m not apologizing any more.
I’ve mostly shot glamour nudes, which are intended to be sexy, but not pornographic. They are to make a woman beautiful in the way a wife wants to be attractive to her husband. They are not just looking for the triggers – the parts of the body that easily trigger arousal. To me that is the definition of porn.
I also shoot fine art nudes. To me fine art is not about the person but about line and form. Just as you would look for lines and form when shooting a landscape, you look for lines and form in the human body.
