The Dip and Photography

February 22, 2009 Discussion

I recently listened to the audio book of Seth Godin’s The Dip from iTunes and I couldn’t help but apply what it says to photography.

Basically the dip is that part of any endeavor where the going gets tough and people quit. In business it is when the market rejects you, or you have technical hurdles, [...]

February 14, 2009 Discussion

I decided to try and find out what the most popular shooting genre was for models by posting the question in the Model Mayhem model forum. The results were interesting to say the least. You can find the whole thread here.
Like I said in a previous post on model photography genres. It isn’t easy [...]

I’m A Guest Blogger

December 24, 2008 Discussion

Just did a guest blog at photographer Nate Lawson’s blog The Photog Formula. The subject is Golden Hour In The Studio.
Here’s a tease:
When Nate asked me to guest blog, I went to his site and noticed he had a whole category dedicated to Sunrise/Sunset. Which immediately made me think of Golden Hour.

December 21, 2008 Discussion

It’s always educational to watch a photoshoot from the outside. Here is one of Playboys YouTube search.
The interesting thing to me is how they seem to be lighting her face with a snooted spot, but using a ring light for the main. Rings put out an incredible amount of light and just annihilate any shadows [...]

December 20, 2008 Discussion

Hot For Words, a philologist who defines words on YouTube, was asked to define the word “Model” in all of its meanings. Hot For Words says she’s a former model, though she just came out with a calendar, which to me kind of makes her a current model.

A big point of the article was eating raw food, [...]

November 20, 2008 Discussion

Great article by a digital assistant and photo retoucher on how he does his work. it is insanely detailed how he handles things from getting to set at 7:30 AM to delivering images to a magazine to backup and archive of files afterwards.
Makes me think about how I need to handle workflow and backup.

Brick Factory Shoot Video

November 19, 2008 Discussion

This is the kind of interesting location I need to find more of. The picture of Scarlett I posted today was taken in an empty building, but that building is now $100,000+ condos. And not as cool. I’ll post another image from that shoot with wonderful golden light tomorrow, have to go dig it out [...]

Art And The Marketplace

November 17, 2008 Discussion

Off Photography.alltop.com I found this interesting article about art and the marketplace.
One of the survey questions I got was, “Why would anyone want to photograph models when there is little to no chance they will make any money doing it?” It is interesting the struggle artists have with being able to make money from their [...]
