William,
It takes written permission (license) from the photographer to use it in your port not only on MM but about anywhere else. We like to know where our work is being displayed, even if money is not being made from it. A photocopy/scann of the "license" should be enough. I've given license like this several times.
By the same token, you may want it written into the contract that you be at least be notified where and how an image of your design is used. You can put anything in a contract, whether the other party accepts it or not, may be another matter.

I have been trying to get accepted onto MM for the longest now and keep getting denied. Finaly after writing a few people about it I recieved a very rude response from "Blind Mike" (a photographer) keeps telling me that I have photos up that are not mine and that MM takes copyright seriously. As a designer, I have done numorous fashion shoots and the photographer usually will put his copy right on the photo witch means I will not be able to use my own work. I am a local designer and all my friends know of my genuine peices and couture fashions and they are on MM. I actually know a few people that definately have other peoples work up on your site, but yet they are accepted. I think what is going on is very unfiar and would like to know what I can do about being on the site as a designer, or if I need to go to futher with getting accepted?

"Model Mayhem (modelmayhem.com) has been purchased by a large corporation. Members thought this would be an improvement over the way it was run by Tyler and his dad. Unfortunately what the new owners have brought are free portfolios with limited use, a website with frequent down time, heavy handed moderation in the forums. If you want to have a portfolio with 20 photos in it and the ability to write more than a few emails a day, then you have to pay $10/month."

This is totally false!
A Basic (free) membership includes 10 photos, 1 list, and the ability to Tag and Private Message all other members.
The lowest paid level is Premium which gives 40 photos and is $6.00 a month!
The higher paid level is VIP with 100 pictures at $10 a month!

OMP censors your communications with other OMP members by blocking all pention or reference to Model Mayhem, Mayhem, or MM! (Paranoid)
Mayhem lest you communicate what ever you want!

Mayhem is much more active than OMP! For a 2 week period, for my whole province, Mayhem usually has about 40 new female models! For the same period, OMP might have 2!

Andy Silvers, I completely adore your work and find it fascinating and captivating. I have been trying to contact you in a million different ways and I would love it if you could help me expand my portfolio. I am 17 and 5'10. I love to do artistic modeling and with a return e-mail, I will send you some sample photos of myself. I am full of ideas and I would love to see what we could create together.

Hi there...I've been modeling for 4 years and have encountered several very extremely creepy photographers. Most tend to make conversation very personal and sex related by calling the models darling, dear, baby ect.I understand if you are familiar with the models but I still find it very unprofessional. In some extreme cases a photographer told me he had an ass fetish and requested to touch my ass during the shoot!! another photographer did not speak much to me during the shoot but just kept staring at me in a really strange way.. after a while i noticed a very obvious bulge on his pants.. Can you get any creepier? I made up an excuse and left the shoot on the spot..since then I don't go for any shoots unless my boyfriend comes along. Photographers...im sure there are many of you who are truly passionate about photography and respect your models but to those creeps out there you should feel ashamed of yourselves for luring innocent young girls into a trap. Please remember models are humans as well...if you have other perverted intentions in mind you should be looking for a prostitute not a model

Model Mayhem (modelmayhem.com) has been purchased by a large corporation. Members thought this would be an improvement over the way it was run by Tyler and his dad. Unfortunately what the new owners have brought are free portfolios with limited use, a website with frequent down time, heavy handed moderation in the forums. If you want to have a portfolio with 20 photos in it and the ability to write more than a few emails a day, then you have to pay $10/month.

This would be acceptable if the site was filled with talented models and photographers. Unfortunately pretty much anyone with a pulse is allowed to play on the site. Most of the photographers are hobbyists and focus entirely on shooting photos of scantily clad women and then try and justify it as art. Many of the models aren't serious about modeling, many don't show up for photoshoots and there have been some rumors that some model profiles are covers for escorts services.

If people try and complain about the quality of the membership being low, they are punished by site administrators and moderators. Moderators are just members from the site, they are often marginally better models or photographers than the bulk of the membership, but just barely. Having the ability to punish members makes some moderators feel very powerful. Since some of them are terrible photographers or models, this is about as much success they will achieve in the photo realm.

There is much posturing by the site owners and moderators that the site is serious, that it is not a dating site. But the truth is that most people are on MM to socialize or to look at photos of naked women and there is a lot of dating and hooking up going on and a number of members have even married and had kids.

The current site with the most features and is free is modelinsider.com. You get a free membership with 50 slots for photos, with unlimited emails and the site works more frequently than MM. The only issue with modelinsider is that they are new and so they don't have 250,000 members.

OMP costs money for anything other than minor freebie portfolios. Unfortunately the site is filled with model managers ( jealous boyfriends and possessive photographers who want to collect models). If you are trying to contact a real model, there's a good chance the portfolio has been abandoned. Out of every 100 profiles on the site, only 25 are active.

Bad odds. If you try and complain in the user forums, the heavy handed moderators there remove you post. Not a good scene.

Comment on What Makes You The Photographer Of An Image? by John

I think it depends somewhat on the type of photography; there isn't a one size fits all category for this. Letting others light your set because you have no clue what you want, much less how to do it, makes it hard to argue that you're a portrait or fashion photographer. Just as having someone tell you how to frame and meter a landscape shot, tell you what time of day to be there and how to print it; won't make you be taken seriously as a nature photographer. You can't expect Annie Liebovitz to be Ansel Adams.

I understand the workshop dilemma. The first workshop I went to several years ago gave me a card full of images that looked great, except that I really couldn't duplicate them on my own for a long time. I just borrowed someone's skills and knowledge of a few hours and tried to call it my own. In fact after a while I gave up even trying to duplicate those first attempts because as I progressed, I realized that my style and vision wasn't the same as the instructors. I had to fail enough on my own before I could start finding my own version of success.

I think this scenario runs rampant through the ranks of new photographers today. Without a study and understanding of the fundamentals of photography we're left just copying our hero's. Poorly in most cases. We buy X-brand camera with a Y-lens because or favorite street photographer uses the same set-up, we have ABC-lights and BR549 triggers because our favorite portrait artist swears by them; then we spend 90% of our time taking photos of high school basketball and our own kids. We're frustrated because we went to the workshop and came back with a hard drive full of wall hangers, but can't understand why your wife hates being your model because you always add twenty pounds to her in the photo. Ten hours of YouTube tutorials later you try to "fix it in post" and she looks like a pixelated cartoon.

So to sort of give an opinion on the subject: I think it depends on why you would ask others to help. Is it because you know your limitations and you're not up to the task? Is it because you know what you want and how to do it, but you just need an extra pair of hands or you can trust someone to carry out your vision while you do something else? I think it's a question you have to answer honestly of yourself before you can call it your own.

I think it depends somewhat on the type of photography; there isn’t a one size fits all category for this. Letting others light your set because you have no clue what you want, much less how to do it, makes it hard to argue that you’re a portrait or fashion photographer. Just as having someone tell you how to frame and meter a landscape shot, tell you what time of day to be there and how to print it; won’t make you be taken seriously as a nature photographer. You can’t expect Annie Liebovitz to be Ansel Adams.

I understand the workshop dilemma. The first workshop I went to several years ago gave me a card full of images that looked great, except that I really couldn’t duplicate them on my own for a long time. I just borrowed someone’s skills and knowledge of a few hours and tried to call it my own. In fact after a while I gave up even trying to duplicate those first attempts because as I progressed, I realized that my style and vision wasn’t the same as the instructors. I had to fail enough on my own before I could start finding my own version of success.

I think this scenario runs rampant through the ranks of new photographers today. Without a study and understanding of the fundamentals of photography we’re left just copying our hero’s. We’re frustrated because we went to the workshop and came back with a hard drive full of wall hangers, but can’t understand why your wife hates being your model because you always add twenty pounds to her in the photo. Ten hours of YouTube tutorials later you try to “fix it in post” and she looks like a pixelated cartoon.

So to sort of give an opinion on the subject: I think it depends on why you would ask others to help. Is it because you know your limitations and you’re not up to the task? Is it because you know what you want and how to do it, but you just need an extra pair of hands or you can trust someone to carry out your vision while you do something else? I think it’s a question you have to answer honestly of yourself before you can call it your own.

I think you can look at it like movie making. The director hires a DP, art director, and any number of crew members, but it's still the director's movie. I think you have to look at it as who is responsible for the end product. Without a director, it's like a ship without a captain. Same goes for photography.

Yeah one of the advantages of Pull is that it is so simple. I'm also probably going to explore having the rope come from different directions.

I have ideas for themes. What I don't usually have is the resources for the models, locations, or props that would bring those ideas to life. Pull is similar to one of the themes I've always wanted to do except with the rope hung from the ceiling; different types and sizes of rope too.

Ron, I was referring to the water spray having the large end of the streak at the top. Shawna is pointing one out. Hot lights at 1/60 looks like rain rather than shower, longer streak. Ignoring the sync speed and shooting at 1/250 makes the water look like beads, little or no streak.

Just came to me, rear curtain sync. I need to go bang my head against the wall. Excuse me.

Falling up? Never had that problem. I'd suggest you make the water hit something and spray out, that would indicate that was the bottom of the stream instead of the top.

Interesting photo. It has a magazine cover feel to it. Guns Monthly? Good finger position, a detail most get wrong.

Is there a way to get the water to not look like it is falling up? I have done a couple of water shoots and the water always looks like it is falling up.

Look like a professional. You may not come across as creepy if your sloppy or unprofessional in your appearance, but you might get a first impression of being a frat boy looking for a thrill, dirty, or not really taking the time to care about how things look. This business is all about how things look. Sweatpants, flip flops, and a stained t-shirt with "Nice Rack!" on the front doesn't say you take your craft and the model seriously. Not saying you need a Brooks Brothers suit to be taken seriously.

My rule of thumb is; do I look and act like the kind of person I would let photograph my wife or daughter?

During the shoot be aware of noises you make. Grunts, groans, huffs, and other verbal acne. Some models are very sensitive to sound that comes from the camera position and may interpret that groan as creepy when it is really a muscle cramping up as the photog tries to stand. It helps to find somebody to watch and listen to your shoot.

The Carly O'Neil interview sounds amazing, especially since she can talk from both a photographer's and model's perspective. I would ask how she senses other models feel knowing that they are being photographed by another model.

There isn't a photographer that I would rather shoot with more. Not only is Mckay a creative genius but super amazing person. I'm glad people get to hear the voice behind the photos. I hope when I'm old and wrinkly I will still get to shoot with him.

Oh, man. I thought I was going to get to see your 10 best/favorite. Instead it was just a teaser!

I do appreciate your explanation of what those top 10 mean to you, because, as you know, I was not one of those who thought the Alice picture was your best. However, as which you like the best, that makes sense. I did get (and appreciate) the story behind that one.

Hottest model does not necessarily equal best pictures though.

Great interview! Really insightful. I've been a big fan of McKay's for a while now- his photographs (and writing, even) never fail to stimulate the mind and impress grandly! He has a raw talent for concepts which is refreshing, as well as a vibrant use of colour and editing that puts a unique twist on all of his work. Can't wait to see what he does next!

Awesome interview by an awesome artist! McKay is one of my favourite photographers, probably THE favourite in fact, on deviantArt. I think I stumbled across him last year by clicking on one of his images, "Unusual Talents", that immediately caught my eye on the homepage to dA when I logged in, and I was led into the wonderfully creative, funny, amazing mind that is McKay's. His gallery just blew me away as well, and I eagerly look forward to every new piece he puts up!
