fine art nudes - different to glamour?
  • I am not sure whether to put this into the photography or modelling category, so here goes.

I have been listenign to the podcast only since about episode 90 something as this is allthat there is on itunes. I wish i had the rest. I will have to order the rest on disc soon.

    now to my topic.

I have noticed that the podcasts talk a alot about glamour photos. I assume that in the U.S. this also means nudes. In Australia it measn more like mens magazine type photos that are not really art.

I was wondering whether you guys coudl do a show about fiune art nudes as opposed to glamour and talk to a photographer about that as opposed to glamour.

I am interested to hear from other people on the forum as to what they feel is a fine art nude and what is not in their opinion. it will be interesting to see what the opinions are in Australia as comared to the U.S.

I am actually doing some PhD research into the history of the fine art nude / nude photoraphy in Australia so this is a question with genuine academic as well as personal interest.

Any thoughts are great, i would love to see a discussion start. if anyone wants to email me I can give them my email address.

I'll try and remember this question next time we interview someone who specializes in Fine Art. You also might want to go back and listen to Ep 1 with Bob Warren as we talk a little about how glamour doesn't end up in art galleries.

In the US glamour has lots of meanings. Which is one of the reasons I say you have to be sure what that means to the model. Maxim style pictures are indeed glamour. Playboy is glamour as well, though normally we'd say "glamour nude" to make it clear.

There is also a chain of photography studios in shopping malls here in the states called "Glamour Shots". For them glamour means getting your makeup done and using a soft focus filter. They images don't even need to be sexy, much less nude.

Glamour also refers to the style used to shoot movie actresses in the 30's and 40's. Jimmy D talked about that use of the word in his episode.

  • Yes I will have to order the DVD's as itunes no longer has ep1. I had to start late in the series as itunes only has ep's forma certain point onwards.

In Australia it is less certain what glamour means. I listened to the jimmyD podcast and will do so again to really understand what he said.

we have a similar chain here in Oz called 'starshotz' glamour photography, i think they go for the soft focus, but often cheesy model type shots to make people look like models. They do the hair/makeup and do some implied nude and might do full nude but i doubt it, they want to have shots that they can display in the shopping centre windows.

I think with the pervasiveness of bad nudes inthe world these days, its harder to make good nudes in terms of getting over the stigma of a bad nude someone sees.

I think it would make a great viewer question for you two. I would love to hear Shawna's views on this topic.

    cheers,

    Derek.
